Why One Should Ride a Coracle

17

Round boats commonly known as coracles have been used traditionally to fish in rivers in many parts of the world. Coracles happen to be among the lightest boats where the individual intending to use it can carry it on the back and go on to do his fishing. Due to their characteristic of being light, they ride on water rather than have part of them sank in water. As a result, they have been used by fishermen in the past without disturbing the fish in the river. Their trait of being light has also made them easy to use by a single individual where one can use one hand to maneuver and the other to fish. When a skilled individual gets into the water, they have been able to maneuver around the river without disturbing the water and hence catching the fish unawares.

They have been traditionally constructed by various craftsmen to best suit the situation at hand. For example, the shape of a coracle to be used in a swift river is not the same as that being used in a slower river. Traditionally, coracles have been built using willow rods which were then tied with the willow bark. The craftsman then ensured an animal hide which was then coated with a skin of tar to make the skin waterproof. The coating of a coracle with tar makes the coracle in question both durable and at the same time ensure the coracle is as light as possible. Others have been interwoven using bamboo and coated with coconut oil and resin. To ensure that the weight is evenly distributed, the coracles here have had a flat base a characteristic that has made them ideal for use in river waters. Where two individuals go for fishing, each of the two should have a coracle each and then have a net between them. They can then move in a common direction as the fish get into the net.

In the modern world, the coracles from Ultraskiff have been retained for fishing as a sporting activity. The tourists have been able to enjoy the rare water vessel where they have had a chance to ride a boat used as early as 1600. Tourists especially have traveled far and wide to at least have a taste of the coracle. Their light weight has made it easy for even the starters to be in a position to paddle it in water. The light weight has also made it move swifter with very little effort from the person using it.

As a vessel of entertainment to tourists, they have been able to move with little or no turbulence to water allowing a number of coracles into the water. The vessel, therefore, allows one to have fun regardless of whether there are other users in the river. With a coracle,  one can easily paddle across and at the same time have people comfortably swim in the same water.
